Having watched
Julie and Julia, i do find myself less intimidated by certain otherwise daunting recipes. After all, what's left of life without firsts?

As i recall, this is only the second time i've dealt with a whole chicken. And last time it was a Cornish hen, considerably smaller, a decade and a half ago.

So naked and vulnerable

This felt very violent to me.

Spinal column removed. It wasn't the struggle i'd imagined at all.

"Butterflied", as the recipe calls it. I wasn't rewarded with a cracking sound as i pressed the breast, as suggested in the recipe.
